The air feels different when you step off the plane. It’s hot and dry. The landscape is populated with cacti, towering aloe vera and black volcanic stone.

It feels somehow like Africa, though it’s actually officially a part of Italy. We are in fact, on a tiny island called Pantelleria. It floats right between the coasts of Palermo and Tunisia, with Malta situated to the south-east.

Incidentally, this little known island also happens to be the location where Tilda Swinton filmed a remake of the 1969 film, La Piscine. Now entitled A Bigger Splash, directed by I Am Love director Luca Guadagnino, the film stars Swinton and Ralph Fiennes. The Guardian says that the film is “a four-way study of sexual jealousy and intrigue”.
We don’t know about that yet, since we haven’t seen it.

But we have visited the island.
